Representing Attorneys And Judges Before The North Carolina State Bar Association
Attorney Dudley Witt, partners at Surratt and Thompson, PLLC, have over 15 years of experience in advising and representing lawyers and judges in matters before the North Carolina State Bar Association.
If you receive a letter from the Bar asking you to answer allegations of professional malpractice, we urge you to immediately engage counsel. If you would like to discuss our services, please contact our office to arrange a complimentary consultation at our offices in Winston-Salem.
The early stages of bar proceedings are critical, and should be handled by an attorney with experience in those matters. Mr. Freedman and Mr. Witt will advise you as you prepare a letter of response to the bar and will represent you before the regulatory hearing commission. If there is an unfavorable outcome in that initial hearing, the attorneys are prepared to provide appellate representation.
We have handled prominent cases, most recently representing Durham County Prosecutor Mike Nifong in trial of charges of ethics violations for his handling of the Duke University lacrosse team case. Mr. Nifong’s case, like other complex matters we handle, involved elements of criminal law, charges of professional ethics violations and civil litigation. By coordinating the separate cases our attorneys can more effectively address our client’s end goals.
We have defended charges of lawyer embezzlement of client funds, embezzlement from professional association trust accounts by staff members, bribery, forgery, and lesser matters such as failure to return client phone calls, missing court dates and making misrepresentations to the court.
Our services also include counseling law firms on how to avoid problems with embezzlement and other trust account problems through appropriate quarterly reconciliations. If a firm has had a problem with misuse of client funds, we help establish those processes in preparation for bar proceedings.
If you have reason to believe charges will be filed against you, or you have received a letter from the bar requesting a response, we invite you to call us at 336-725-8323 or e-mail our office to arrange a free consultation with Mr. Freedman or Mr. Witt.
